One of the great failures to keep a secret was the work done by the chief priests at the time of Jesus’ death. Matthew in his gospel tells us that just after Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, some of the guards went into the city and told the chief priests all that happened. They assembled with the elders and took counsel; then they gave a hefty sum of money to the soldiers, telling them: “you are to say, his disciples came by night and stole him while we were sleeping.’ And if this gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble. The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has circulated… even to this present day (Matt 28: 11-15). But the apostles and followers of Jesus did not and could not keep the resurrection of Jesus a secret. They proclaimed it everywhere – even if at great costs to themselves. All the apostles except John were put to death and suffered martyrdom for proclaiming Christ’s resurrection. Jesus being raised was no secret. It was a reality to be proclaimed.
Are we still trying to keep it a secret? Are we trying to keep our belief in that mystery a secret?
The secret of new life in Christ for us begins when people can read in the face of God an “unconditional Yes.” And you will know for certain that you are moving in the right direction when your fellow travelers begin to see “Yes!” written in your face.
